Parent Support Partners

pspMichigan’s Parent to Parent Support Model: Parent Support Partners

The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH), in partnership with the Association for Children’s Mental Health (ACMH), the statewide family organization in Michigan, have developed a curriculum, informed by family members and professionals, for training parents to become Parent Support Partner’s.

Parent Support Partner’s, serving as an equal member of the treatment team, will assist in identifying goals within the Person Centered/Family Centered Plan that will support the parent to develop skills, knowledge, resources, and confidence in parenting a child with serious emotional disturbance (SED). The Parent Support Partner service, provided by another parent who has first-hand experience navigating the public child serving agencies and raising a child with mental health challenges, will focus on increasing confidence and competence in parenting skills, increasing the parent’s knowledge to better navigate systems and partner with service providers, and empower the parent to develop sustainable, natural support networks after formal service delivery has ended.

pspThe Parent Support Partner service is a Medicaid billable, B3 service identified to address specific goal areas within the Person Centered/Family Centered Plan. Parent Support Partners are typically utilized to enhance the therapeutic process of the clinician by working directly with caregivers to expand, enhance and increase the skills, knowledge and abilities needed to meet the numerous challenges facing families of youth with mental health needs.
