Finding Help & Navigating Supports

Finding Help & Navigating Supports

Finding the right support for your child or youth can feel overwhelming. There are different systems, services, and entry points — and it is not always clear where to start.

💡 You do not need to have all the answers. Taking one step at a time is enough.

Where to Start

If you are unsure where to begin, these options can help connect you to support:

Start with 988

  • Available 24/7 by call or text
  • Can help assess your situation
  • Connects you to local resources

Contact Your Local Crisis Line

  • Michigan Crisis & Access Line (MiCAL)
  • Can connect you to community services
  • Helpful even if it is not an emergency

Reach Out to a Trusted Provider

  • Pediatrician or primary care provider
  • School counselor or social worker
  • Existing therapist or mental health provider

Types of Support You May Encounter

Different supports may be recommended depending on your child’s needs.

  • Outpatient therapy: Ongoing counseling or mental health support
  • Psychiatry: Medication evaluation and management
  • Mobile crisis services: In-person support during a crisis
  • Crisis stabilization services: Short-term intensive support
  • Wraparound services: Team-based support across home, school, and community
  • Peer and family support: Support from those with lived experience

Navigating School-Based Support

  • Request support from your child’s school team
  • Ask about counseling, behavioral support, or accommodations
  • Consider an IEP or 504 Plan if your child has ongoing needs
  • Keep communication open with school staff
💡 You have the right to ask questions and be part of decisions about your child’s support.

Common Challenges (and What to Know)

  • Waitlists: Ask about interim supports or cancellations
  • Insurance barriers: Ask what is covered and what alternatives exist
  • Not knowing where to go: Start with 988 or MiCAL for guidance
  • Feeling overwhelmed: Focus on one step at a time

Tips for Moving Forward

  • Write down names, numbers, and next steps
  • Ask providers to explain options clearly
  • Bring your Crisis Compass Form to appointments
  • Follow up if you do not hear back
