Mental Health Parity Updates

paperclipCalling All Parents of Youth with Mental Health Needs Who Have Private Insurance

Are you a parent of a minor child who has been diagnosed with a mental health disorder such as Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, Anxiety, Mood Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant, or ADHD and has private insurance coverage? Is your private insurance coverage limiting your ability to access mental health services needed by your child? Does your insurance coverage cover mental health at a lower rate than it does your medical coverage? And as a result of these limitations, has your child been unable to access the services and supports they have needed such as hospitalization, home & community based therapies, respite, or parent supports? Or have the services and supports you could access cost so much you were unable to take advantage of them due to the hardship it created for your family? If you are a family who is experiencing a lack of access to mental health care for your child due to the lack of coverage provided by your insurance, we want to speak with you. ACMH is currently working with a coalition to promote changes that would ensure mental health coverage was covered at the same rate and scope as your medical coverage. We need to hear from you today! The time to speak up and demand a change is now! Please contact us if you are willing to share your story and help us educate decision makers about why they must stop the discrimination of our children and families. 1-888-226-4543 or acmhadmin@sbcglobal.net.

paperclipParticipants Needed for Research Studies

Michigan State University is currently recruiting participants who have been diagnosed with clinical depression and are currently employed to fill out an ANONYMOUS online survey. The survey takes about 30 minutes to complete and in exchange, participants will receive a $10 AMAZON gift card. This survey has been approved by Michigan State University's Institutional Review Board. Responses will be used for research purposes only and will NOT identify participants in anyway. In order to receive the AMAZON gift card, participants will be taken to a separate website at the end of the survey and submit their email address. They will then receive an online coupon to AMAZON sent to their email address, in an email which will not reference the purpose of the study in any way. What a Difference Family-Driven Makes: Stories of Success and Lessons Learned

Community Psychology's emphasis on citizen participation aligns with the nationwide children's mental health family movement and is clearly evident in communities that have made sustainable system changes. The national family movement has long advocated for the meaningful engagement of families and youth who are the focus population of the federal Children's Mental Health Initiative. Little rigorous research about the experience of families in leadership positions or of their impact on systems of care has been done. In the absence of scientifically acquired evidence, this article offers the reader a glimpse into the authority, influence and credibility earned by four family leaders as well as their impact on local system of care communities.
