Recognizing Warning Signs

Recognizing Warning Signs

Changes in behavior, mood, or daily functioning can be early signs that a young person is struggling. Trust your instincts — if something feels “off,” it’s okay to reach out for support.

💡 You don’t have to wait until things get worse. Early support can make a big difference.

Common Warning Signs

Warning signs can show up in different areas of a young person’s life.

Emotional & Behavioral

  • Mood swings or irritability
  • Withdrawal from family or friends
  • Increased anger or outbursts

Verbal & Communication

  • Talking about feeling hopeless
  • Expressing thoughts about death
  • Saying they feel like a burden

Daily Functioning

  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Difficulty concentrating

Changes at School or Socially

  • Sudden drop in grades
  • Skipping school
  • Isolating from peers
  • Conflict with teachers or friends

When to Pay Closer Attention

⚠️ Seek support sooner if changes are:

  • Sudden or intense
  • Lasting more than a couple of weeks
  • Impacting safety or daily functioning
