When Home Isn’t Safe Anymore

Redesigning Intensive Family Support

What would it take to help families keep standing—before crisis becomes collapse?

Why this conversation matters

Families need more than another referral.

Some families are already engaged with outpatient treatment, crisis response, schools, and other systems—and still struggle to maintain safety and stability at home. This conversation explores the space between community-based care and out-of-home placement: the missing middle.

We are asking what practical, intensive, family-centered supports could help children and their families remain safe, connected, and supported while healing takes place.

Our focus: Earlier intervention, family stabilization, and coordinated support—not just responding after a crisis.

Designing the missing middle

What would stabilization infrastructure look like?

Participants are invited to imagine support designed around family life, rather than existing programs or funding silos.

Safety & crisis support

Timely crisis navigation, immediate practical assistance, and safety planning.

Family capacity

Respite, caregiver and sibling support, and trusted relationships.

Keeping life together

Support for school, work, housing, routines, and coordination across systems.

Community insights

What we’re hearing

During our session, participants explored the supports families need. We will review and synthesize the table discussions and share emerging themes here.

What would families actually need?

Everyday, practical, and relational supports beyond clinical treatment.

What would systems need to do differently?

Changes to access, coordination, eligibility, and cross-system collaboration.

What if preservation, not reaction, were the goal?

Earlier support, sustained intervention, and family-defined measures of success.

Session findings: Coming soon. Contributions will be reviewed and summarized; participant ideas do not necessarily represent ACMH policy positions.

What would you build?

We welcome ideas from families, advocates, providers, and system partners. What support is missing? Why does it matter? What would it take to build it—and what stands in the way?

Contributions opening soon. We are preparing a way to share additional ideas after the session. In the meantime, use the Table Conversation Guide above to explore the questions.

Please do not submit names, diagnoses, or other identifying details about children or families. Submissions will be reviewed before any public summary or publication. A submission form will be added after its privacy notice and review process are ready.
