The 2017-2018  A Silent Crisis:  Creating Safe and Supportive Schools for LGBTQ Students resources and trainings are supported by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), through multiple funding sources including a cooperative agreement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Division of Adolescent and School Health (CDC/DASH), and a Safe Schools Healthy Students Grant (SS/HS) and a Project Aware grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).  The views expressed in the training do not necessarily reflect those of the CDC or SAMHSA.

For more information about the trainings, contact Laurie Bechhofer ([email protected]) or Kim Phillips-Knope ([email protected]) at the Michigan Department of Education.

To read more about these great resources and upcoming trainings available in local schools read more from the Michigan Health & Education Partnership below:
The 7th edition of A Silent Crisis: Creating Safe and Supportive Schools for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) Students has just been published! It includes a wealth of new
resources to help schools comply with Title IX and meet the objectives of ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act). The guide supports educators with creating a positive, respectful and inclusive learning environment in their classrooms, hallways, schools, and communities to ensure equitable educational opportunities for all students. With more and more students coming out to schools as transgender and non-binary, the guide has many of the latest model policies and practice guidelines to support full inclusion of these often-marginalized students. Resources address vocabulary, bullying and harassment policies, family engagement, names and pronouns, student records, privacy, restrooms, locker rooms, and sports.

The 7th edition includes more than 70 new or updated resources. Many of the resources are available online using the link above. If staff attend an upcoming A Silent Crisis workshops (see schedule above) they will receive a copy of the new 7th edition guide. Please contact Julie at [email protected] or 517-699-7000 X1208 to order copies. Since the new guide is larger than the previous one, the cost has gone up a bit as well. The new guide is $60 plus S&H.
